Iconic Mumbai bookstall to close down


70-year-old Strand Book Stall in Fort will roll down its shutters for the last time on February 28. Coincidentally, February 27 also marks the death anniversary of TN Shanbagh, the legendary founder of the book house. Shanbagh’s daughter, Vidya Virkar, has confirmed that the bookstall is getting closed this month-end.The Strand Book Stall is located off the Sir Pherozeshah Merwanjee Mehta in the hustling-bustling Fort area of Mumbai.Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, former Prime Ministers — Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, industrialist JRD Tata, celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, writers like VS Naipaul were among the visitors to this bookstore.Founded in 1948-49, the bookstall has always promoted outstanding books of various genres and was the first in the world to offer 20% discount on all books.”Books are the best friend of human beings….more and more people should read more and more books,” the legendary Shanbaug, a recipient of Padma Shri, had once said.
